Learn To Swim Lessons for Babies & Toddlers
Our outstanding Learn to Swim Baby and Toddler Program has been especially designed to teach water awareness and water safety skills such as kicking, turning, reach and holds, submerging and back floating - all hidden within our playful activities.
The more fun you have in the water with your tots the more likely they are to buy into those “secret” swimming skills you’re teaching! Most littlies are happier having mum or dad in the water with them, that’s why our teachers gently guide both you and your tot in the learn to swim process. Toddlers have boundless energy and their favourite words are “me do myself”, they have their social “L” plates on, are not keen on sharing, love to explore but have no real concept of danger and are indeed our busiest and often most challenging little swimmers! Catering for these busy little people means our program needs to be fun, flexible and fast paced, allowing time for exploration and discovering how to react in water. Which class is right for my child? Baby Bubble: I'm approximately 3 to 6 months old. As well as learning to love the water these classes are wonderful for my development as I move more freely in water than on land. All this movement helps strengthen my little body and helps me to learn about my arms and legs and movement. I'll also be learning how to take a breath on cue in preparation for submerging. My mummy and daddy will receive lots of tips in class to help me learn. Click here for more information on our FREE Baby Bubble classes. Little Nipper 1: I'm approximately 6 to 12 months old and I can sit and crawl. In my LN1 class I will continue to learn about taking a breath and submerging as well as learning to kick, turnaround and grab the side and other fun activities to help me learn how water works. Parent in water. 30 minute lesson. Up to 6 children per class. Little Nipper 2: I'm now a toddler approximately 1 to 2 years old If I can't already do so I will be learning to take a breath go underwater and turnaround and grab the side. I will learn to glide through the water as well as lots of other water safety activities. Parent in water. 30 minute lesson. Up to 6 children per class. Little Nipper 3: I'm approximately 2 to 3 years old and can run and jump, I'm very active and becoming independent - I say things like "me do myself". One minute I want mum and dad and the next I want them to let me run free! With motor skills developing I am more capable in the water and will build on my ability to submerge, jump into water, turnaround and grab the side and glide and kick back and forth through the water. Parent in water. 30 minute lesson. Up to 6 children per class. Little Nipper 4: I'm now 3 to 4 years old, I can take direction from the teacher and understand when I need to wait, stop and go, I can take turns and am happy to share. Although I lack style and aren't yet very efficient in the water, I can now kick further with my face, competently jump into water and recover to the side. As a Little Nipper 4, I spend much time reinforcing safety skills such as safety turns, treading water, rolling on my back to breathe and kicking back to the side. Parent in water. 30 minute lesson. Up to 4 children per class. Beginner: I'm 3.5 years or older. I may be a timid child or have had a fright in water or simply had little experience in pools, I might even be frightened of water. I can't swim or jump into deep water or kick back to the side (without floaties.). I am a beginner. My teacher will be kind and gentle and will make learning fun, she or he will never use force. With gentle encouragement and happy time in the water I will soon be swimming like a little fish. We recommend all beginners attend at least two lessons per week to fast track their confidence and safety skills. 30 minute lesson. Up to 4 children per class. Safety Kickers: I'm 3.5 years or older. It's time for mummy and daddy to sit back and watch while I learn to swim with my teacher. I am happy to separate from mum or dad and understand when I need to wait, stop and go, I can happily take turns and follow my teacher's directions. I can jump into water, turnaround and kick back to the side without any aids or assistance. As well as building on the distance I can move through the water, I will be working on my kicking and floating skills and continue to reinforce important safety skills such as recovering to safety, treading water and learning how to take a breath. I'm building foundation skills in preparation for learning the more complex swimming skills of freestyle and backstroke. 30 minute lesson. Up to 4 children per class. Why our Little Nipper classes have Mum, Dad or Carer in the water There are many benefits for parental participation in your baby and toddler swimming lessons. Maximum practice time in a safe supervised lesson. The one on one assistance from the parent gives the child the time they need for their learning progression. There is less waiting for their turn so the child can continue practicing their skills at their own pace. "Swimmers under the age of 4 still need a lot of manipulation. This forms excellent neuromuscular patterns, also known as muscle memory. If parents are manipulating correctly, they will produce great quality swimmers by the time the child transitions into a Learn to Swim class on their own." Laurie Lawrence |
