How long will it take for my child to learn to swim?
Learning to swim sometimes feels like it’s taking forever and we know that can be hard to watch! But we tend to forget that swimming is a locomotor skill, just like learning to walk, run, hop, skip or jump and just like any other locomotor skill, practice is the key.
Children practice land movements for most of their waking hours, every single day and we can see how long it takes them to develop land skills. In the pool we see the children who spend the most time in water acquire swim skills way sooner than those who attend one lesson per week or just seasonally. Thank goodness, with more heated, indoor pools available more people have access to year round lessons and this is helping to reduce deskilling.
There are other factors that impact on just how quickly or slowly children learn to swim.
Coordination, concentration, fitness and temperament all play a part in a child’s ability to acquire swimming skills.
Fearless Freddie’s push themselves to their limit. They're happy to dive right in and attempt new skills and are forever exploring the water. Their love of exploring means they often gain swimming skills more quickly than their timid friends.
Timid children on the other hand are much more cautious, they need time to check out their surrounds and usually approach each new skill with caution. These children need more time to adjust than the fearless child. It's important to be patient and respectful of their caution, with time in the water they'll soon be joining their fearless mates!
Many children fit somewhere between the two, neither totally fearless, nor totally timid and their level of confidence can change from lesson to lesson or at any point during a lesson. It's not uncommon for a fearless child to give themselves a fright as they test their limits or a timid child to suddenly “click into confidence” and become fearless!
Regardless, it’s best not to peg children into any particular slot, but rather to work with their emotional and physical needs at any given point in time. Be understanding about how concentration, coordination and a raft of other factors will be at play while learning to swim. And know that learning to swim in itself is a great activity to help build resilience, fitness and coordination.
When it comes to making swimmers, there's no substitute for time in the water, especially when that time is comfortable, enjoyable, regular and non threatening.
When it comes to safety and all the other benefits of swimming your swim lesson might just be the most important appointment in your week.
