Saturday and Sunday Family Swims
I know I'm always on my soapbox about the kids needing to be in the water more often. But honestly, the ability to relax and to be totally at one with the water only comes from spending many, many hours in water.
Not just formal lessons alone, but complimenting lessons with plenty of time to experiment with buoyancy, breath control and the feel of water.
During the cooler months this extra time in the water is hard to achieve in backyard pools or the beach.
This is why we are offering our booked customers the use of our heated pool of a Saturday and Sunday for a FREE swim from 10.45am to 11.45 noon during the months of July and Aug. These swims are also a great way to catch up on missed lessons. If you can make it along we know the kids will benefit.

Learning to backfloat sooner!
40 years of observing littlies in the water has taught us some very helpful backfloating tricks, and we thought you might like to try them if your child finds backfloating a challenge.
There’s a place in learning to backfloat that I’ll call the “tipping point”. That is the point where one feels they are starting to lose balance and are about to experience the sensation of falling. At this point we all automatically struggle to right ourselves back to a more vertical, "feel safer" position.
In backfloating there’s also a “sweet spot”. This is the furthest horizontal position the child feels relaxed, before they feel unbalanced and start to struggle. How far into the horizontal position feels comfortable will be different for each child.
When moving a child from the vertical to the horizontal position watch for the clues that tell you they are in their sweet spot, the position where they feel comfortable and relaxed and are most likely to cooperate with you.
Once you move past the sweet spot, and enter the tipping point, knees begin to tuck up or twist to the side, arms fling out to the side and the head tilts forward as the child struggles to right themself back into an upright position. The further you push the child through this point the more the child is likely to struggle and fight to sit up or roll over.
Once the child starts to struggle or cry there's very little productive teaching time. And really, the fix is easy, simply gently rock the child back into their sweet spot, allow them a moment to realign their vision with the horizon. Then, supporting their head against your chest or shoulder, gently lower your own body into the water until you reach their sweet spot.
Once in the sweet spot, gently rock the child back and forth, all the while trying to take them just a tiny bit further back, without triggering the sensation of falling. With patience, care and practice every child can happily learn to backfloat.

TIPS to remember
- Lower your own body down in the water and lean back rather than just tipping the child back.
- Avoid triggering the sensation of falling, by supporting your child's head as you tilt them back.
- Use slow, smooth movements. Nothing makes people fight to right themselves faster than the sensation of falling!
- Use distractions, my favourite is looking for the little mouse or bird that lives on our pool roof!

Treating and balancing our water the Healthy Swim Schools way!
Here's a little information for those who might like to know more about our pool and how we treat and balance our water.
We have a Secondary Sanitation system - AOP (OZONE + UV) as well as a salt water pool.
The combination of dissolved ozone with UV light creates AOP (Advanced Oxidation Process) and the quality water produced by this system is second to none.
Once upon a time these advanced treatment systems were simply not affordable for small swim schools, especially due to the high capital costs.
While still expensive, luckily now days payment plans have allowed smaller, private swim swim schools like dipadees to enjoy the added water safety these systems provide.
The combination of Ozone and UV effectively destroys all the organic proteinaceous material (the basic food material for bacteria and fungi) stopping it from multiplying.
Not only that, the Ozone and UV combination effectively destroys virus. The AOP + Chlorine system ensures nasties such as Cryptosporidium are destroyed and destroyed faster than an Ozone system alone.
Bluei Chemical Controller
The HYDROGUARD® HG-302 TurbiPlus® (Bluei) online water quality analyzer combines accurate turbidity and colorimetric free and/or total chlorine measurements.
Turbidity is measured in the colorimeter on the very same water sample as the chlorine for highest precision and control and for reduced maintenance.
Testing our water quality every ten minutes day and night, this device brings the accuracy of the lab test to our pool water monitoring and control, isn't that fantastic!
CO2 Controller
Dipadees Swim School also uses CO2 to regulate our PH. This unit works in conjunction with the Bluei system to efficiently control pH levels and assist with a slower increase of Total Dissolved Solids levels.
And let's not forget our Filters!
Four GIANT filters turn our pool water over every two hours, day and night. That's a lot of water through the filters every two hours!
All of the above equipment and technology combines to provide our swimmers and teachers with beautiful healthy water. Safe to say we invest a lot in the quality of our pool water.
