What’s happening over the school holidays?
Just a quick reminder that the last lessons for 2021 is Wednesday 22nd December and the first lessons back in 2022 is on Thursday 6th January.
Learn to swim customers are not charged for lessons that fall during our Christmas/New Year closure. And a reminder, we have a perpetual program that continuously rolls over from month to month. This means we will hold your usual lesson time and day for when we reopen on Thursday 6th January, unless you advise us otherwise. If you are going away outside of our Christmas / New Year close dates, we ask that you please pop on to your customer portal and mark yourself away. |

Kids need time to familiarise themselves with unfamiliar water
If you're enjoying time in the water over the holidays be sure to take it slow and steady with the children. Don't expect young kids to immediately reproduce what they do in swim lessons. Just like when meeting strangers, little people need time to adapt.
This is also why swim lessons are so repetitive, skills need to be very thoroughly reinforced to stand kids in good stead for an emergency.

Is there anything we can practice while on holidays?
When it comes to learning to swim, lots of fun time in the water is gold.
Lots of undirected playing and exploring is perfect for beginners. Supervise closely while allowing these less experienced kids to choose what they want to do in the water. With lots of parent patience they will come around and start to join in the fun.

Kicking races are fantastic! kids love them and they're great for building kick strength and endurance while enjoying valuable family time ... and hey mum and dad, this is great exercise for you too!
Stay safe over the school holidays - a quick revision!
People get into trouble trying to help others!
Sometimes people find themselves in trouble trying to save others. This is why learning how to help someone without getting wet is an important water safety skill and it’s called “dry rescue”. Dry rescue means exactly that, stay dry while helping someone in water. This means throwing an object out to the person in trouble so they have something to hold. Or laying on the side (lay down so you don't get pulled in) and use a long object to reach out to the person and then pull them back to safety. This might be a noodle, or rake, hose, towel or even a branch. Just whatever is nearby. Even people who can’t swim can perform a dry rescue. Practice floating on different objects Learning to hold different objects for support is important. Think about the many different items that can help to support you in the water such as an esky or esky lid, plastic bottles, containers and even floating objects like a bike helmet. Having the confidence and knowledge to hold a floating object buys a little more time while help is on its way. |
Be alert on holiday
Holidays are fun but you need to be as vigilant as ever. Be on the alert for risks that you may not have at home. Do a safety audit as soon as you arrive. Check for different or unsuspected bodies of water such as fishponds, pools, spas, rivers, waterways, cattle troughs, dams, containers of water, eskies etc. Be alert to the risk of your toddler climbing obstacles that may be lower and easier to climb than you have at home, such as lower baths and toilets. No child is ever so “good” that they can swim without adult supervision! Even though the kids might be good swimmers, always have an adult on duty to watch over them. Remember older children and teenagers are not mature enough to always stay focused on watching others in the pool, or to make mature decisions. Dive bombing might be fun, but people can and do slip, causing injury to themselves. Pool walkways are wet and can be slippery so remember to WALK around pool areas. |
ALWAYS:
Have your pool fence and gate checked regularly! For information on, or to arrange a pool safety inspection visit your local government website www.brisbane.qld.gov.au CPR saves lives To learn resuscitation, check out the Queensland Ambulance Service or the Resuscitation Council of Australia. |
