How to Improve Your Swimming Stroke — Tips from Our North Brisbane Swim School

Whether you are a parent watching your child splash through the same mistakes each lesson, or an adult who has been swimming for years but never quite nailed a proper freestyle, swim stroke improvement is something almost every swimmer needs at some point. The good news is that with the right guidance and a bit of consistency, meaningful progress is very achievable.
Here are some practical tips from our team at Dipadees Swim School in Everton Hills, North Brisbane.

1. Focus on Body Position Before Anything Else

One of the most common mistakes swimmers make is trying to fix their arms or legs before sorting out their body position. If your hips are sinking, no amount of arm technique will help you swim efficiently. A flat, horizontal body position in the water is the foundation of every stroke.
For children, this is something we work on from the very early stages of our learn to swim program. For adults, it is often the single biggest change that makes the most immediate difference.

2. Slow Down to Speed Up

It sounds counterintuitive, but swimming slower with correct technique will make you faster in the long run. Many swimmers, particularly children, fall into the habit of splashing and rushing through their strokes rather than moving through the water with control and efficiency.
At Dipadees, our Big Kids Swim Lessons and adult swimming lessons both focus heavily on slowing the stroke down, building correct muscle memory, and then gradually increasing speed once the technique is solid.

3. Work on One Stroke at a Time

Trying to fix freestyle, backstroke and breaststroke all at once is overwhelming and counterproductive. Pick one stroke, identify the specific part that needs work — whether that is the catch, the pull, the kick or the breathing — and focus on that element for several weeks before moving on.
Our stroke correction swimming programs are structured exactly this way, breaking each stroke into individual components so swimmers can build real competency at each stage.

4. Breathing Is Usually the Culprit

For freestyle swimmers especially, breathing technique is almost always where things go wrong. Lifting the head too high, holding the breath for too long, or turning too far to breathe all disrupt body position and timing. Learning to rotate the head rather than lift it, and to exhale steadily underwater, makes an enormous difference.
This is one of the most common areas we work on with children in our Big Kids program, and with adults who come to us saying they can swim but just cannot get their breathing right.

5. Get Professional Feedback

It is very difficult to identify your own stroke faults without someone watching from the pool deck or above the water. A qualified swim teacher can spot issues in seconds that a swimmer might have been struggling with for years.
If your child has hit a plateau in their progress, or if you as an adult want to swim more efficiently, a few sessions of focused stroke correction with an experienced instructor can make a dramatic difference. Our swim squads and big kids programs in North Brisbane are specifically designed to provide this kind of targeted feedback in a structured environment.

6. Consistency Beats Intensity

One long swim session per week will not improve your stroke as effectively as two or three shorter, focused sessions. Regular repetition of correct technique builds muscle memory far more efficiently than occasional bursts of effort.
This is one of the key reasons we recommend year-round swimming lessons rather than seasonal attendance — the consistency of weekly lessons at our heated indoor pool in Everton Hills makes a measurable difference to how quickly swimmers progress.
