Beyond the Lap Pool — Why Water Exercise Classes Are the Workout You Have Been

7/29/2026

If your idea of pool exercise is racing laps in a serious swimming cap, it is time to think again. Water exercise classes have quietly become one of the most effective and enjoyable workouts available — and they are not just for seniors or people recovering from injury. At Dipadees Swim School in Everton Hills, our heated indoor saltwater pool is open throughout the week for adults looking for a smarter, gentler, and surprisingly challenging way to get fit.

Here is why water exercise might just be the workout you have been missing.

Your Joints Will Thank You

Water supports up to 90 percent of your body weight, which means every movement you make in the pool puts dramatically less stress on your joints compared to land-based exercise. For anyone dealing with arthritis, back pain, knee issues, or recovering from an injury, water exercise classes offer a way to stay active without aggravating the problem.

But do not let the word "gentle" fool you. The resistance of water means your muscles are working hard with every movement — often harder than they would in a gym — without any of the jarring impact of running or high-intensity training.

It Works Your Whole Body

Unlike many gym exercises that isolate specific muscle groups, water exercise engages your entire body at once. Water walking, for example, works your core, legs, arms and back simultaneously just to keep you balanced and moving forward. Add in some resistance movements and you have a full-body workout that leaves most gym sessions looking one-dimensional.

The Heat Helps

One of the lesser-known benefits of exercising in a heated pool is that warm water helps relax muscles and improve circulation. This makes it particularly effective for people using the pool for hydrotherapy or rehabilitation, but it also means everyone walks away from a session feeling genuinely good rather than beaten up.

At Dipadees, our 25 metre mineral saltwater pool is heated year-round, making water exercise a comfortable option even in the middle of a Brisbane winter when the thought of a cold outdoor pool or an early morning run is decidedly unappealing.

It Is Genuinely Low Stress

There is something about being in the water that most people find calming. The combination of warm water, gentle resistance and rhythmic movement has a measurable effect on stress levels. Many of our regular lap swimmers and water exercise participants tell us their sessions at Dipadees are as much about mental wellbeing as physical fitness.

Who Is It For?

Honestly, almost everyone. Water exercise classes and lap swimming sessions at Dipadees suit:

  • Adults looking for a low impact fitness routine
  • People recovering from injury or managing chronic pain
  • Older adults wanting to stay active safely
  • Pregnant women seeking gentle exercise
  • Anyone who finds land-based exercise too hard on their body
  • Swimmers who want to add variety to their training

When Can You Come?

Our pool is open for lap swimming and water exercise throughout the week, with daytime sessions available Monday through Friday. Our pool is also available by appointment for qualified therapists and instructors running hydrotherapy or other water-based fitness sessions.

Ready to Give It a Try?

If you have been looking for a workout that is easier on your body but still genuinely effective, water exercise at Dipadees might be exactly what you need. Visit our Lap Swims and Water Exercise page or call us on 3355 1550 to find out about session times and availability.
